Our world has a big problem with Litter, especially when 80% of it is in our oceans. Did you know that most of the Litter in our oceans is from the land which has been blown or carried there by the wind or water?

Litter and especillay plastic has a devastating effect on the sea creatures and their environment. Plastic never breaks down and if eaten by these animals, cause either death or pain. For example I saw a dead albatross cut open with heaps of plastic inside of it. It had died because it thought the plastic was food. People are responsible for this and this is never a good outcome for animals.

Did you know that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the biggest island of plastic Litter in the world?It is 1,600,000 square kilometers in size and that is as long or bigger than Texas.

After you read this, are you going to Litter anymore or stop damaging our environment???

 

Last Thursday we marched down to the Panmure Basin for a sailing session. It was a long walk to the sailing and we walked down Domain Road and crossed a couple of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
When we got there we were greeted by the sailing instructors who were teaching us how to sail. Room7 went first on the sailing boats and Room 6 was on land. While waiting Mr Bell and Mrs Agnew were teaching us about the pulleys and the sail materials. We also learned about tying knots with ropes.

We learned that the yacht is called an optimist.There was a rudder that you use to steer the boat and the boom moves the sail in the wind. My partner was Ezekiel and before we got on the yacht we had to put on life jackets. Then we pushed our boat out into the basin and hopped in it. At the start I was controlling the sail of the yacht and Ezekiel was controlling the rudder of the yacht. We were able to follow Steph around the basin. Sometimes we went really fast in the wind and it was fun. Later we were able to jump overboard but the boat moved away and capsized. We had to turn it back upright with the help of Steph. It was tough to do this.

When we got to shore we had to take the boats out of the water on their trailers and get them ready to be put away. We changed back into our school clothes and said goodbye and thank you. It was a long hard walk back to school because the hill seemed to be very steep. It was a great day and I loved learning how to sail.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Three weeks ago it was Ash Wednesday  and I made a Lenten promise. My Lenten promise was to fast from selfishness and think of others. Last week I did not think about the cleaners at school  but I wrote a letter of apology. I will keep doing trying to think of others.

On a nice fine sunny Tuesday, Room 6 walked across the road to the Stone Cottage.  When we got there we were greeted with a happy smile by Terry and Patrick. Patrick was the historian of the cottage because he knows a lot about the history of the Panmure cottage.

Once we were inside the cottage, the first thing that caught my attention was the  washboard. It must have been hard to scrub the clothes with their bare hands. I also wonder how they made soap to wash their clothes. 

When we entered the small kitchen Terry held this  weird thing up and asked us, what was it. At first I didn’t know what it was but then Terry said it was bellows. They were used to keep the fire going during the winter.

I was very interested to hear about the stilts that the children used to use to walk around on. They were made of wood and were high off the ground. They had to balance on them and these were one of their games they used to play.

Even though the stone cottage is so close to our school, I never knew what was inside. I really enjoyed having the chance to go there and learn more about Panmure.

 

I was feeling excited when I heard that we would have swimming lessons at CLM pools. 15 minutes after morning tea we got changed into our swimming togs after we got changed we went to the bus. When we got there we went in our groups my instructor was Paris we did freestyle,kicking and the boat when we got on the boat i was a little nervous but i was also excited.We did swimming lessons for two weeks  It was so much fun I enjoyed it.

Yesterday after morning tea we went to Mr Bell under the canopy because we were having ki o rahi games on the field. The coaches name was Trey and he was also the ref for the day. The teams were kauri, totara, Rimu and Rata. Kauri is green , Rimu is blue ,  totara is yellow and Rata is red. After that they told us the winners who were kauri. I enjoyed playing outside with my friends and the other children from the bigger classes.

Last Thursday I was so excited! Room 6 students were given ANZAC biscuits to look at, feel and to eat later. In world war 1 in 1915 ANZAC biscuits were made for the men and women who went to war. The ANZAC biscuit felt hard like a rock but it was not cold. It looked like a rough moon rock and it tasted like coconut and oats.

Last Friday when I woke up I was so excited! I knew it was St Patrick’s day. So I jumped out of my bed. Once we got to school I said to my friend, “it’s St Patrick’s day!” So we did sports after Mass and digging up the Time Capsule from 25 years ago. The games we played were gumboot toss, scatter ball, T ball, shooting ball and hoops, rock paper scissors. We had fun playing in our teams.

On Sunday we had a big mass celebration with three priests. There was beautiful singing and dancing. After Mass everyone went to the hall we sang three songs for the guests and then we had lunch. It was an amazing celebration.
